Wood-handle stamps, clear stamps, self-inking stamps — there are so many types of stamps that it's hard to keep up!

If you are new to stamping, you may be confused about them all.

But there's one thing people can agree on: you should start with wood-handle stamps if you are a beginner.

Why? Because wood-handle stamps are the traditional stamps. They are the go-to for many stampers because they are straightforward to use and can last for years.

So, what are wood-handle stamps, and how do they work?

What Are Wood Handle Stamps?

Wood handle stamps or wood-mounted stamps are a type of rubber stamp that has a wood handle attached to it. These are the traditional stamps you are used to seeing in the office supply store.

You can use wood-handle rubber stamps for scrapbooking, card making, or even legal and business documents.

Wood handle stamps vary in size and style, but they all have one thing in common: their wood handles!

The wood handles make them easy to grip and use and give the stamps a traditional and classic look. Some wooden stamp handles even have carved designs on them, which adds to their visual appeal.

How Do You Use a Wood-Handle Stamp?

If you own or want to purchase one, how do you use wooden handle stamps?

Follow these tips:

  • Get your wooden handle stamp.
  • Check if it is clean and dry. If not, clean and dry your stamp first before you use it.
  • Get your ink pad.
  • Start pressing the rubber part of the stamp into the ink pad.
  • Check if the whole stamp design got covered with ink. If not, re-ink your stamp.
  • Press your wooden handle stamp onto a piece of paper or the medium where you want to imprint.
  • Repeat the process if you want to make multiple imprints.

If your wood-mounted rubber stamp is new, it may not make a satisfactory impression at first. Try stamping and inking several times and see if it improves.

If not, you might need to condition your stamp. You can do this using an eraser or fine-sand grit paper.

Why Choose a Wood Handle Stamp?

While different types of stamps are available on the market, wood handle stamps are still a popular choice among many.

Why?

Firstly, they have a timeless and classic appearance. They also are less expensive than other types, which makes them a good option if you are on a budget.

Additionally, wood handle stamps are suitable for different ink types and colors. Not just that, it is also applicable to various stamping surfaces.

Wood handle stamps offer more control than stamps with other handle materials. The handle provides a comfortable grip, allowing for precise placement of the stamp on the intended surface.

However, it can be less convenient because the wood handle is heavy, and you must always bring a separate ink pad.

The Difference Between Wood-mount, Clear-mount, and Cling Rubber Stamps?

What is a wood-mounted rubber stamp?

Wood-mounted rubber stamps have wooden handles. These are the traditional stamps that have been used for decades. The rubber block is glued into a wood handle. So, one rubber stamp corresponds to one handle, which can be bulky when stored.

What is a clear-mounted rubber stamp?

Clear-mount rubber stamps are usually for clear stamps. Clear stamps are made of a transparent material such as photopolymer, acrylic, or silicone. Clear stamps come in a set and are usually stored on an acetate sheet.

To use it:

  1. Remove the clear stamp from the sheet.
  2. Get a clear acrylic block and place your stamp on the block.
  3. Ink it and press it on paper to make an impression.

You can remove the clear stamp from the acrylic block and use another clear stamp. So, the acrylic block is reusable for many clear stamps.

What is a cling-mounted rubber stamp?

Unlike wood-mounted stamps, the handle or block is not fixed for cling mounts. Cling-mounted rubber stamps work like clear stamps.

Cling-mounted rubber stamps use rubber as the medium for engraving the stamp design. It comes in a set with pre-cut rubber blocks.

To use it:

  1. Remove the rubber stamp from the set.
  2. Get a clear acrylic block and place your rubber stamp on the block.
  3. Ink it and press it to make an impression.

However, you'll notice that the rubber does not easily stick to the acrylic block, so you must add a clear film backing or adhesive on the rubber to add some 'cling’ to it.

What is the Difference Between a Self-Inking Stamp and a Rubber Stamp?

Rubber stamps usually need a separate ink pad. It requires a two-step process. You need to ink the rubber stamp and press it to make an imprint.

However, a self-inking stamp has an integrated ink pad, so you don't have to worry about bringing a separate ink pad. It only requires one process: press directly on a piece of paper to make an impression.

Self-inking stamps have a spring mechanism where you press down to make an impression. Then, as you lift the stamp, it automatically re-inks itself.

Wood Handle Stamps UV or Invisible Ink

If you're considering using UV or invisible ink on wood handle stamp products, you've come to the right place. These inks are non-toxic, water- and sweat-proof; you can use them on paper, rubber, or cardboard.

If you're looking for a portable, battery-operated solution, you can get the UV or invisible ink refill bottle and a dry pad for the UV or invisible ink.

You can use wood handle stamps on all types of surfaces, and can be custom-printed with any color ink. Ink for wooden handle stamps is available in several colors, so you can use them on paper, skin, or even industrial surfaces.

Depending on the type of wood you use, you can use different ink pads to create a personalized wedding invitation, save-the-date, or thank-you card.

If you're looking for a solution to repetitive stamping, a self-inking stamp is the best choice. The ink pad on a self-inking stamp is re-inked before every impression, and the stamps are entirely reusable.

Many of these stamps feature water-based ink that lasts for thousands of impressions. The UV Hand Stamp is an excellent choice for repetitive stamping. You can even get them in any color and choose between two or three colors, depending on your preference.
